According to figures from HSE, more than half of the reported injuries from tyre fitting activities come from the manual handling aspect of the process. Furthermore another 25% of reported injuries are caused by incorrect tooling such as inferior tyre levers. Also there is an issue with compressed air, with LGV tyres being inflated from 70psi to 150 psi the result of explosion can be catastrophic.

Wheel alignment can cut costs and carbon. Incorrect wheel alignment will increase the rolling resistance of a vehicle. Approximately 30% of a vehicle’s fuel is used to overcome tyre rolling resistance, any slight misalignment of tyres will substantially increase fuel consumption. Tyre wear is another advantage of ensuring wheels are correctly aligned.  Poor alignment obviously has a detrimental affect on the life of a tyre, causing them to wear unevenly and prematurely. which consequently affects the handling characteristics of the vehicle.

Effective tyre maintenance is essential to the smooth running of a successful fleet. Choosing the right tyres and applying regular maintenance package not only saves you money it also reduces vehicle down time and contributes to driver safety. The value of regular checks is unquestionably beneficial.

The tyre industry is rapidly evolving and there is increasingly advanced technology available to help transport managers ensure constant monitoring.

Speak to the manufacturers or specialists to find the right tyre for the right job. Some tyres a better for on and off road use, others are ideal for long haul. Saving money on the initial cost of the tyre is not always the cost effective way.
